Nirvana, the Functional Baseline

“Nirvana isn't nothing — it's a state of being functional.” Fifteen sheets on what remains when the loop stops: what the tradition said first, what the clinic measured, the operation that stops the loop, and where that operation is the wrong instrument.

The fire goes out, not the person

ESTABLISHEDNIRVANA-1 §2.1

“The three fires extinguished are named, and they are not the person”

NIRVANA-1 §2.1
RĀGADOSAMOHATHREE FIRES · OUTSTILL HERE
  • nir- + √vā: a blowing out
  • rāga · dosa · moha
  • attachment, aversion, delusion
  • extinction and "not nothing" both hold

SeamThe reading of the three fires as an inverted Vedic household ritual is Gombrich's, cited here through a secondary source (§10.2). Nothing in the plate rests on it.

The faculties remain

ESTABLISHEDIti 44 · §2.2–2.3

“five sense faculties remain unimpaired, by which he still experiences what is agreeable and disagreeable and feels pleasure and pain.”

Itivuttaka 44, trans. John D. Ireland
+−FIVE FACULTIES · UNIMPAIRED
  • the person is still there
  • pleasure and pain still arrive
  • gone: attachment, hate, delusion
  • occupied while alive, and working

SeamThe canon describes the living arahant. That the same state is reached by recontextualising memories is this paper's claim, not the canon's. (This poster's reading.)

The light is the house

OPENAN 1.49–52 · §3.1

“Luminous, monks, is the mind. And it is defiled by incoming defilements.”

AN 1.49–52, trans. Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu
luminousA GUESTPLAN · THE LIGHT IS THE HOUSE
  • āgantuka: arriving, a guest
  • the defilements are visitors
  • the root of buddha-nature
  • Theravāda reads it narrowly

SeamA comparison offered by a non-specialist (§10.6). The luminous-mind passage is a real hook, and it is contested. It is not plain Buddhist doctrine.

A baseline moves, and it can move down

ESTABLISHED§3.2 · Lucas et al. 2004

“individuals did not completely return to their former levels of satisfaction, even after they became reemployed.”

Lucas, Clark, Georgellis & Diener 2004
BEFOREAFTERSETTLED · NOT FULLY RESTORED
  • set points are not neutral
  • set points can change
  • a 15-year panel, over 24,000 people
  • movable, so in principle addressable

SeamIt shows a baseline can be lowered. That integration can raise it does not follow from this literature; §5 has to carry that, and it comes back smaller than the metaphor.

The second arrow

ESTABLISHEDSN 36.6 · §4.1

“Just as if they were to shoot a man with an arrow and, right afterward, were to shoot him with another one.”

SN 36.6, trans. Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu
ONENOT TWOTHE PAIN STAYS · THE MULTIPLIER GOES
  • the untaught feel two pains
  • the instructed feel one
  • the pain is not removed
  • the multiplying of it is

SeamThe sutta describes a trained mind. It says nothing about how long the training takes, or whether a writing exercise can stand in for it. (This poster's reading.)

The loop supplies its own context

ESTABLISHED§4.2 · Nolen-Hoeksema et al. 2008

“Rumination enhances the effects of depressed mood on thinking, making it more likely that people will use the negative thoughts and memories activated by their depressed mood to understand their current circumstances.”

Nolen-Hoeksema, Wisco & Lyubomirsky 2008
A STAIR THAT ONLY GOES DOWNMOODMEMORYCONTEXT
  • mood recruits memory
  • memory darkens the present
  • the present recruits more past
  • so intervene at the memory

SeamRumination predicted the onset of depression. It did not predict how long an episode lasts, so the loop is a proven way in, not a proven reason for staying (§4.3).

The stuck point

ESTABLISHED§5.1 · Cognitive Processing Therapy

“PTSD results when disruptions in these schemas manifest in inaccurate self-statements, called 'stuck points,' that interrupt normal recovery from the traumatic experience.”

VA National Center for PTSD, on CPT
STUCK POINTCPT34 RCTsAN INACCURATE SELF-STATEMENT
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy
  • 34 RCTs in the PTSD Trials Repository
  • the first-line recommendation
  • the premise, in clinical language

SeamCPT's large effects belong to a specific protocol, delivered by trained clinicians, for a specific diagnosis. They do not transfer to self-administered work on ordinary memories (§10.9).

Plumb, not pleasant

ESTABLISHED§5.2 · CPT · Park 2010

“not a better story. A TRUE one that is also livable.”

NIRVANA-1 §5.2
EVENT BENTEVERYTHING BENTPLUMBTWO WAYS TO FAIL · ONE TARGET
  • assimilation: the event bent to the belief
  • over-accommodation: every belief bent
  • accommodation: true and livable
  • two ways to fail, both named

SeamThe criterion says what a sound integration is. It does not say who checks the accuracy, and a mind inside the loop is a poor judge of its own sentence. (This poster's reading.)

Meaning made, not meaning-making

ESTABLISHED§5.3 · Park 2010

“continued attempts to make meaning without some product (meaning made) have been described as a type of rumination associated with increased distress.”

Park 2010
STILL SEARCHINGKEYSTONE SETSAME ACT · ONE OF THEM LANDS
  • the search that never lands is the loop
  • same act, same material
  • the difference is convergence
  • quality over quantity

SeamThe convergence test is scored by the person running it, once a month. Three blanks in a row reads as rumination, and nobody else reads the log. (This poster's reading.)

Concrete how, not abstract why

ESTABLISHED§5.6 · Watkins 2008

“Abstract why keeps you in; concrete how and what gets you out.”

NIRVANA-1 §5.6
?WHY ME?WHAT HAPPENEDWHAT NEXTWHAT IS TRUE NOWKEEPS YOU INGETS YOU OUT
  • brooding asks "why me?"
  • pondering asks what happened, what next
  • brooding predicts depression over time
  • pondering predicts the reverse

SeamWatkins names three factors that decide whether repetitive thought helps or harms. Level of construal is the usable one, not the only one (§5.6).

Parts: the picture, not the proof

OPEN§6 · Internal Family Systems

“CPT carries the empirical load; parts-language carries the picture.”

NIRVANA-1 §6
SELFPARTPARTPARTPARTPARTTHE PICTUREn = 17 · NO CONTROL GROUP
  • Internal Family Systems
  • one uncontrolled pilot, n = 17
  • a 2025 review: promising, not established
  • use the words, do not cite them as proof

SeamThe 2025 scoping review returned 403 in session, so its verdict comes from a secondary report. The n = 17 pilot is the verified item (§10.3).

If it can still change, change it

OPEN§7.1 · Troy, Shallcross & Mauss 2013

“Skill at reframing a situation you could have changed is not a skill. It is the mechanism by which you do not change it.”

NIRVANA-1 §7.1
REFRAMED · STILL CRACKEDREPAIREDSTILL CHANGEABLE? CHANGE IT
  • uncontrollable: reappraisal helped
  • controllable: reappraisal hurt
  • first establish that it is over
  • then, and only then, integrate

SeamOne cross-sectional study of 170 people, with a corrigendum not yet retrieved. It cannot show direction, so the gate stands as provisional (§10.4).

The halo on the failure mode

ESTABLISHED§7.2 · §7.4 · Welwood

“These feel like integration. They are the named failure mode with a halo on.”

NIRVANA-1 §7.2
A GOOD STORYPROPPEDNOTHING BEHIND
  • "I deserved it"
  • "it made me who I am"
  • "it was for the best"
  • spiritual bypassing, named by Welwood

SeamA paper titled the functional baseline is exactly the one that gets used to skip this step. Naming it is the only mitigation a text has (§7.4).

Do not score the arrival

ESTABLISHED§7.5 · Infurna & Jayawickreme 2019

“reporting growth may be a coping strategy rather than a reflection of real personality change.”

Infurna & Jayawickreme 2019
FELT · ARRIVEDTESTED · FUNCTION5–25%REAL GROWTH
  • 5–25% showed real growth
  • self-report tracks change poorly
  • score function, not feeling
  • ask: is output resuming?

SeamMeasuring by function needs a measure of function. The paper names the test, output resuming, but no instrument scores it yet. (This poster's reading.)

The baseline that can be lost

OPEN§12.5 · F-IRR (v1.1)

“As written, §8 uses the tradition's word for a quantity that behaves like the psychology's”

NIRVANA-1 §12.5
BASELINE · MOVESTERMINUS · BEDROCK?F-IRR · OPEN
  • every tradition's terminus is irreversible
  • a baseline can be moved
  • repair (i): call it reversible
  • repair (ii): recognition before stabilisation

SeamRepair (ii) is a structural parallel, not evidence. A Dzogchen teacher would very likely deny that a set point is the nature of mind at all (§10.14).

§11 · work orders

The schedule of work

The paper ships an instrument as well as an argument. Read top to bottom: the gate first, the log last.

Falsifier date · 24 Feb 2027
OrderWhat it asks, and when
W-1The controllability gate
is this over, or is it ongoing and changeable?before anything else · if changeable, change it
W-2Write the accommodation, not the good story
X happened, it was ______, and it does not mean ______ about me now.one sentence · check it against both errors
W-3Construal check
abstract (why me) or concrete (what happened, what next)?weekly · one word
W-4The convergence log
what do I now understand about this that I could not have written last month?monthly · three blanks in a row = the loop
W-5Do not score yourself on transformation
score function, and the accuracy of the W-2 sentenceevery time you are tempted to
W-6The return-time log
date of each drop, date function resumesper drop · shortening return times = familiarisation

And if W-1 through W-4 are unrun on 24 February 2027, NIRVANA-1 is a consolation rather than an instrument. Mark it DECORATIVE, leave it standing, do not delete it. §11

Elevation across the traditions

Three of the ten foundational questions, asked of four traditions and of this paper. Each part of the premise has a different ancestor: the functional nirvana is Theravāda, the overlay is closest to Advaita and buddha-nature, and integration is closest to Vajrayāna's transformation of the afflictions (§12.4).

7 · Can it be lost? Not for an arahantNoRecognition: yes · stabilised: noNoImplicitly yes: baselines move

* Advaita Vedānta is a Hindu school, carried as Buddhism's nearest rival and the closest precedent for the overlay. Row 7 is the open fork: every tradition's terminus is irreversible, and this paper's baseline is not (F-IRR, sheet 15). NIRVANA-2 adds a third repair: Theravāda puts irreversibility at the first stage, stream-entry.

What remains

“The tradition said first that nirvana is not nothing — the faculties remain unimpaired and the liberated wrote the library.”

“the search which never lands is the loop itself”

“a situation you could still change is not one to make peace with.”

The premise kept. The axis corrected.

Ten questions at the foundation

The ten foundational questions NIRVANA-1 §12.1 asks of every tradition, word for word, with this paper's own answer under each. The seventh is the one the paper leaves open.

  1. 01SelfIs there a self that suffers and is freed?Bracketed: a psychological agent with parts§12.1 · §12.2
  2. 02ScopeIs samsara cosmological (rebirth across lives), psychological (a loop within one life), or both?Psychological only: the loop§12.1 · §12.2
  3. 03DriverWhat drives it?The loop supplies its own bad context§12.1 · §12.2
  4. 04AttainedIs liberation something new, or what was always already there?Uncovered: a baseline under an overlay, moved by work§12.1 · §12.2
  5. 05Two or oneAre samsara and nirvana two things, or one thing seen two ways? Two states of one system§12.1 · §12.2
  6. 06RemainderWhat remains after liberation?A functioning person; output resumes§12.1 · §12.2
